[Also in Divisions B3 and H1] An electric cable has a perforate or reticular sheath extruded over its insulation. An apparatus for covering a cable with such a sheath comprises an annular extrusion head 3 and guiding sleeve 2. Head 3 comprises a stationary outer collar having elements 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP> and an inner ring 10 at one end of a sleeve 20, slidable in the sleeve 2, the other end of sleeve 20 being coupled to an annular plunger 23 which is reciprocated in a double acting cylinder 24 by fluid pressure on surfaces 27, 27<SP>1</SP>. A notched ring 18 is screwed to element 9<SP>1</SP>. In its first end position the plain edge of ring 10 is in contact with the outermost lip of the annular extrusion orifice 16 in the ring 18. Synthetic, e.g. thermoplastics material, maintained at its extrusion temperature by a heating sleeve 30 is supplied from a tube 7 through a duct to an annular passage 15 and is extruded through notches 17 in ring 18 forming longitudinal strands (31) on cable 1. At its second end position, the edge of ring 10 is separated from the notched lip of orifice 16 and synthetic material is extruded both through notches 17 and through orifice 16, forming transverse strands (32) on the cable. In other embodiments, sleeve 20 slides in an annular space between sleeve 2 and easing 4, inner ring 10 may be stationary and the outer collar moving, and notches 17 may be in the edge of ring 10. The axis of the apparatus may be vertical or inclined. Other extrudable substances, e.g. thermosetting plastics, viscose, glass or metals may be used.</p> |
