Hydrocarbon conversion/rearrangement is effected using a crystalline, zeolite molecular sieve catalyst under relevant operating conditions, the catalyst being contacted with basic N-compds., S-compds., alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides, organometallic compds., water and/or steam under conditions in which the catalytic activity of the external surface of the catalyst is selectively lowered.
