A programmable portable infusion pump system for automatically injecting a medicinal substance into a patient, including an infusion tube connected to the patient's body, at least one assembly comprising a pump unit (12) and a supply chamber (14) containing the medicinal substance, and a programmable controller (10) enabling the medicinal substance to be injected at pre-programmed times. The pump unit (12) and supply chamber (14) assembly may be removed from the controller while still being controlled thereby. Said system may be programmed on the patient and enables a number of infusions to be controlled by a single controller (10) since a plurality of pump unit (12) and supply chamber (14) assemblies may be connected to a single controller.
