Described are a process for making back-foamable synthetic leather and the back-foamable synthetic leather itself. The synthetic leather comprises a layer of nonwoven and a decorative layer. On that side of the nonwoven which is remote from the decorative layer an open plastics structure is introduced into the nonwoven in a first operation, followed by one or more further open plastics structures in one or more further operations. The surface of the nonwoven acts as a coupling face and as a barrier for the back-foam material. The elasticity of the synthetic leather remains intact.
