In order to control the compressor of a car's air-conditioning system, the speed of the car is continuously monitored. The speed signal passes to a differentiator which calculates the instantaneous acceleration and this is then compared with a reference value. If the acceleration is greater than this threshold, the compressor is switched off, remaining in this condition as long as the acceleration threshold is exceeded, but cutting back in when the acceleration drops. It is also switched off when the engine is under full load. Apart from these temporary off states, the compressor alternates between off and on states subject to cabin temperature requirements.
