The container (8) for topping up the salt for regenerating salt container, in the water softening system for a dishes or clothing washing machine, has a closure (11) in the salt outlet (10). The closure (11) is a manually-operated slide (12), to open and close the salt outlet (10), and the slide (12) is opened automatically when the topping-up container (8) is placed on the container for regenerating salt. The topping-up container (8) can be set in steps, or steplessly, for a number of different salt vols. The container (8) is composed of two half-sections (13,14) which are shape and/or keyed force locked together, and pref. move telescopically against each other. It is funnel-shaped, with a handle (15) at the upper container section (13).
