A passive optical network, arranged between a central station and the subscribers, is used for transmission in both directions. The central station is connected to an exchange. The passive network has subscriber branching points and several subscriber connections connected to these points. Optical carriers of different wavelengths are provided both for the subscriber connections and also for out and return channels of a connection. Optical multiplexer/demultiplexers are provided for combining and/or dividing the signals to be transmitter. In multiplex mode these have n optical inputs and one output. In demultiplex mode they have one input and n outputs. The carriers for each direction are combined into one group. The groups have different arrangements for their frequency ranges. For the individual contacts different carriers are provided for incoming and outgoing channels. ADVANTAGE - Simple, efficient and inexpensive system.
