To operate the press section of a papermaking machine, the pressure force of the press and relaxing units is reduced in zones or steps, from the normal level to a lower level, from the edges of the fibre web passing through as far as the ends of the press shoe. Also claimed is an assembly with pressure and relaxing units where each is located in at least one zone, with variable pressures applied from the edges of the press assembly in zones or steps as far as the ends of the press shoe. USE/ADVANTAGE - The press section in the papermaking machine, to extract water from the web, prevents the development of pressure peaks and gives fine adjustment of pressure relaxation at the edges. It can be controlled by semi-skilled operatives with a visible indication of the relaxed pressure at the edges.
