A power press comprises a bed 10, a reciprocable ram 14, a carrier B having members 22 on which it is supported for movement in a first direction from a first position outside the press to a second position in the press and means for moving the carrier in the first direction from the second position to a third position in the press wherein the weight of the carrier is relieved from the members 22. According to the invention, the means consist of first means 30 carried by the carrier and defining a downwardly-facing surface 32 which is upwardly inclined in the first direction, second means 26 supported by the bed and defining an upwardly facing surface 28 upwardly inclined in the first direction, the surfaces 28, 32 coming into engagement as the carrier is moved from the second to the third position, and power means 42 for moving the carrier up the surface 28 to thereby relieve the load of the carrier from the means 22. The carrier may transfer work into the press, but in the example it is used for die changing. In the second position, a roller 34 carried by pivoted arms 36 is swung by the hydraulic screw jack 42 into a slot 40 in wedge member 30. The carrier B is moved by the jack until two pairs of clamping members 56, 58 thereon engage opposed members 50, 52 on the bed. |
