The switch has at least two main electrodes at a set distance apart for low pressure gas discharge and arranged in a switch chamber (14) to form the anode and cathode of a gas discharge path. At least the cathode has an aperture for the discharge trigger. The back of the cathode has a cap-shaped control electrode whose opening is adjacent the discharge path. It is separate from the cathode and is connected to a control voltage source. The anode and cathode have metallic support bodies and contact material inserts. The support bodies (2,3,30) are hollow cylinders with uniform wall strength and with flanges (21,31). Lugs (22,23) are provided for self-centering the electrodes inside the switch chamber (14). The flanges (21,31) are sealingly fitted through the insulating chamber wall. ADVANTAGE - Uses minimum amount of material. Simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
