Drawing light conducting glass fibres - by feeding glass rod and glass tube into tubular furnace at different speeds and drawing thin covered rod from bottom

Method of drawing light conducting glass fibres in which a glass rod (2) of low refractory index is fed inside a glass tube (3) of high refractory index and both rod and tube are fed at different speeds into a tube-shaped furnace (1) where they are melted and drawn off from the bottom. ADVANTAGE - Fibres of various thickness with covers of various thickness can be produced by varying the feeding speeds. Esp. fibres of large dia. such as 70 microns may be drawn with thin covers of only 1-1.5 microns thickness.
