Liq. pharmaceutical prepns. are stabilised by addn. of an effective amt. of citric acid (I), esp. that necessary to give a pH of 3.5-6.5, pref. 4-5.5 Opt. the prepns. may also contain a dimetallic phosphate (II). The compsns. generally contain 0.10-0.30g of (I) per 100 ml. If (II) is also present, this is pref. dipotassium, disodium, or diammonium phosphate. The amt. of (II) present is generally 0.05-0.20g per 100 ml. USE - It is partic. suitable for compsn. contg. nitrogen cpds., esp. alkaloids, local anaesthetics, and antitussives. They may be administered orally or parenterally.
