3,5-dihydroxycarboxylic acids of formula (I) and their lactones of formula (II) are new: A-B = CH-CH or C=C; X-Y = CH2CH2 or CH=CH; R1 and R2 are each up to 20C, opt. unsatd., alkyl (opt. substd. by 1-6C alkoxy or OCOR5); 3-7C cycloalkyl; phenyl, thiophene, furan or naphthalene residue (these all opt. substd. by 1-3 of halo, 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy, 3-7C cycloalkyl or OCOR5) or pyridyl, opt. substd. by 1-3, 1-4C alkyl; R5 = 1-8C alkyl; R3 = up to 8C alkyl (opt. unsatd.); benzyl, phenyl, thiophene, furan or naphthalene residue (all opt. substd. as above), or 3-7C cycloalkyl; R4 = H, 1-8C alkyl, metal cation, ammonium ion, phenyl, benzyl or 2,3-dihydroxypropyl. Also new are the intermediates of formula (III), (IV), (VI), (VII), (VIII), (IX) or (XII): Q-X-Y-CHO (III); Q-X-Y-CHOH-CH2-CO-CH2-COOR4 (IV); Q-Z; Z = -X-Y-CN (cpds. (VI)); -CHO (cpds. (VII)); -CH2OH (cpds. (VIII)); or COOR7 (cpds. (IX)); R4 = 1-8C alkyl; R7 = protecting gp.; Q = a gp. of formula (i). |
