The process concerns the prodn. of magnetic recording media based on a polymeric substrate (I), (a) a coherent ferromagnetic metal thin film (II) or (b) a metal sub-coat (III) and (II), in which (a) (II) or (b) (III) is produced by physical vapour deposition (PVD), and opt. a protective top coat. The novelty is that, before PVD, (I) is exposed to 150-400 nm excimer UV radiation, with an energy density below the ablation threshold.
