The particulate material may be conductive, photoconductive or insulating and is preferably Se, Zno, ZnS, CdS, Cd 2 SSe, Se-Te alloys, compounds of As and Se, cadmium yellow, indigo, a quinacridone dye, an azo dye, a phthalocyanine, polyvinyl carbazole, a pyrrocoline, carbon black, garnet, iron oxide, or prussian blue. The plastic layer may be hydrogenated glycerol rosin ester or a styrene or epoxy resin and may be softened by heating or the action of liquid or vapourised solvents such as ketones, hydrocarbons and halohydrocarbons. The layer of particulate material may be provided by cascading techniques using glass beads or plastics-coated metal, or by dusting, spraying, or vapour condensation dipping in a fluidized bed. It is desirable to restrict the cascading technique to the initial coating step. The plastic layer may be formed on a support of aluminized polyethylene terephthalate, conductively coated glass or paper, a paper or plastics sheet and may be in the form of a sheet, foil or cylinder. Alternatively the layer may be self-supporting.
