There is described a polytungstic acid containing peroxo groups and optionally hetero-carbon atoms of the general formula WO3.xCO2.yH2O2.zH2O, in which x is from 0 to 0.25, y is from 0.05 to 1 and z is from 0.16 to 4, and also processes for the preparation thereof. These compounds are suitable for electrochromic display devices and as radiation-sensitive materials.
