Reheating and keeping warm a continuously cast strip - with the strip cut into sections and supported on edge in the furnace

The method concerns reheating or keeping warm a thin steel slab or strip after a continuous casting unit or before a rolling unit adjoining such a casting unit. For purposes of reheating and keeping warm, the strip (1) is brought from its vertical casting position into a horizontal, on-edge position. After this for purposes of rolling, it is brought into a lying-flat position. The installation has a) a mechanism between the casting unit (2) and the furnace (5) for turning the strip onto its edge; b) a device (20) for cutting the strip into sections; c) means for conveying the strip in the furnace in its on-edge position; d) a mechanism between the furnace (5) and the rolling unit (10) for restoring the strip into a lying-flat position. USE/ADVANTAGE - In combined metal casting and rolling plants. It allows space, building and energy costs to be reduced in comparison with known methods/installations.
