The control section of a dashboard-mounted display unit incorporates a central processor (3-31) with read-only and random-access memories (3-32,3-33) for processing information through an input/output interface (3-34). As the headway of a preceding vehicle decreases, a warning sound of bells is followed by a synthetic spoken warning. The first warning is inhibited at least until after the lapse of a predetermined interval following the interruption of the second one. USE/ADVANTAGE - On heavy goods vehicle, first warning is not harsh or meaningless when restarted at least four seconds after discontinuance of second warning.
