A process enabling the characterization of the textures in a digitized image comprises: - determining in unit 3 the modulus and orientation of the gradient of luminance corresponding to each image element; - determining, unit 7, from among the image elements neighbouring a current element, the element for which the absolute value of the difference between the orientation of the luminance gradient of the element concerned and the orientation of the luminance gradient of a neighbouring element, modulo 90 DEG , is a maximum, this maximum value being called the order of the luminance gradient of the image element concerned; - determining a first characterization parameter (P1) of the texture of the image element concerned by computing the root mean square of the modulus of the luminance gradient, in a window comprising an array of elements centered on the element concerned; and - determining a second characterization parameter (P2) of the texture of the image element concerned, by computing the root mean square of the order, in a window comprising an array of elements centered on the element concerned. Application is to the segmentation of images, to target recognition, to the interpretation of images and to image adjustment. <IMAGE> |
