In a gyroscope having a magnetic support 14, 16 which provides horizontal restraining forces on a gyro rotor 12 rotating about a substantially vertical axis, the horizontal restraining forces are provided between opposed magnetic polefaces e.g. 26, 30 on the rotor and on a stationary bearing member and at least one of the magnetic polefaces is provided with a high conductivity current path so that eddy currents can be induced in the path upon relative movement between the polefaces to provide a damped restraint of the gyro. As shown, the rotor 12 is supported by a shaft having magnetized ends 20, 22 defining polefaces 24, 26 which are located adjacent magnets fixed to a housing 10, the magnets having polefaces 28, 30 and being surrounded by electric windings 32, 34. At least the poleface 30 supports a member of current conductive material and the member may be in the form of disc or a ring having radially inwardly projecting conductive portions interconnected at the centre of the ring. Hydraulic support of the rotor shaft may be provided by a liquid film supplied by a conduit 38 to the poleface 30. In use, any departure from vertical of the spin axis of the rotor 12 causes eddy currents whose effect is such as to return the axis to vertical. The magnetic characteristics may be adjustable to avoid undesirable effects occurring during running up or braking down of the gyro rotor.
