A battery cover 11 has venting cavities 30a- 30f, one cavity communicating with each cell via ports 31a-31f, and the open tops of the cavities 30a-30f are closed by a sheet 13 of hydrophobic, gas-permeable, microporous polyethylene which is secured to the cover 11 with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Sheet 13 passes gases and prevents the passage of liquid. Sheet 13 and the adhesive are acid resistant, the sheet being made from sintered polyethylene powder of 50 microns particle size originally. Acid creep between cover 11 and sheet 13 is prevented by resin sealant (37) (Fig. 4, not shown) or (41) (Fig. 5, not shown), the sheet 13 being disposed in a recess (36) or slot (40), respectively, in the cover 11 to give the battery a flush top. Filler apertures 19a-19f receive caps (20) in cover 11, (Fig. 1, not shown). |
