A sheet metal can body 1 comprises an end wall 2 and a tubular side wall 3 which includes a plurality of flexible panels 4 recessed within the cylindrical envelope of the side wall and extending between plain cylindrical end portions 5 of the side wall. Each panel 4 is formed of a plurality of elongate concave flutes 6, each flute being defined laterally on each side by a convex rib 7. The panels may be separated circumferentially from adjacent panels (Figures 1-5) or contiguous, in which case the outer rib of each panel is arranged to lie on the cylindrical envelope of the side wall such that the perimeter and envelope of the side is substantially constant along the entire length of the side wall. Preferably, at least in the longitudinal middle region of the panels, the ribs of the flutes lie on a chord of the cylindrical envelope of the side wall (11, Figure 5). Each panel may have 2 to 8 flutes. The panels flex when the can body is subject to internal pressure increase or reduction, eg during or after processing of the food or fruit juice in the can. <IMAGE> |
