<p>A surface having an array of cavities (8) each having an individually controlled heater (18) can be used for a variety of purposes. Sensors for detecting the positions of objects, temperatures and pressures feed information to a controller for activating heaters (18). The heaters heat a medium (14) which expands and sends pressure pulses from the cavities (8). The pressure pulses can be used to exert a force on adjacent objects (6) for making bearings, motors and deformable mirrors. The pressure pulses can be used in hydrodynamic bodies to influence fluid flows and can be controlled as a phased array pressure wave transmitting or receiving antenna. <IMAGE></p> |
