PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for various fine chemicals including medicines and agricultural chemicals by reacting a cyclic amide derivative with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst containing the group VIII element in the periodic table under mild reaction conditions. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (A, X, Y, Z are N, S, O, CO, SO, SO2, or methylene, methylidyne, vinylidene or imino which may be substituted); two (on the same or adjacent atoms) of the substituents of A, X, Y, Z may form a five or six-membered ring comprising C, O, N, S; k, l, m, n are 0, 1) is reacted with a compound of formula II [R is alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, aryl or aralkyl which may be substituted; Q is OH, halogen, OSO3R, OCO2R (R is the above-mentioned R or NH2), etc.] in the presence of a catalyst containing the group VIII element in the periodic table, preferably a ruthenium catalyst, rhodium catalyst or iridium catalyst at room temperature to 300 deg.C, preferably 80-200 deg.C, to give the compound of formula III or IV.
