PURPOSE:To obtain a TiC whisker having prescribed aspect ratio and high quality in high efficiency by adjusting the molar ratio of a whisker-forming catalyst to a Ti source raw material to a specific level in the production of a TiC whisker by a solid-phase reaction process. CONSTITUTION:A raw material mixture is produced by mixing (A) a titanium source raw material composed of titanium dioxide and/or an alkali metal titanate, (B) a carbonaceous material composed of carbonaceous powder (e.g. carbon black), (C) a forming catalyst selected from the chloride of Fe, Ni or Co (e.g. NiCl2) and, as necessary, (D) a pulverization-suppressing agent consisting of an alkali metal chloride (e.g. sodium chloride). The amount of the component C is selected to be 0.003-0.3mol% in terms of Fe, Ni or Co based on Ti in the component A. The obtained mixture is subjected to thermal reaction in an inert atmosphere to obtain a TiC whisker having an aspect ratio determined by the amount of the component C. |
