PURPOSE:To improve combustion performance on a lean side by means of gas blowout effect, and increase the torque of a layer combustion engine, by increasing combustion pressure on a rich side. CONSTITUTION:The top surface of a piston 3 is formed in a step shape, and the height of the step in compressive direction of a combustion chamber space in an intake port 5 side is different from that in an exhaust port 7 side so as to form the layer of rich mixture in a range on a lower step, and also form the layer of lean mixture in a range on a higher step. As a result, the compressive rate on the rich side is increased in comparison with that on the lean side. In a rotary piston engine, a rotor recess is formed to have a step in an excentric shaft direction and also the step difference is provided in rotor rotating direction in some case. It is formed in such constitution that the rich side may be hardly cooled, in order to rise a combustion temperature.
