PURPOSE:To minimize the loss of raw material and to improve yield at the time of producing a globular-fiber-lump activated carbon. CONSTITUTION:A coal or petroleum tar pitch is melt-spun to form a pitch fiber, which is infusibilized to obtain an infusible carbonaceous fiber having <=2mm average length. The carbonaceous fiber and a fine pitch powder having 1-30mum grain diameter are mixed and then globurized with a rotary-disk treating device in which two coaxial disks are rotated in different directions or one disk is rotated and the other disk is fixed, e.g. a coffee mill, by continuously supplying the fiber and powder into a gap between the disks from close to the shaft. The globule is then heated above the m.p. of the pitch and further activated. Since the fine pitch powder is uniformly dispersed on the surface of the fiber, the fine powder functions excellently as a binder. Thus, a globular- fiber-lump activated carbon excellent in adsorptivity, adsorption rate, handleability, etc., is continuously and conveniently produced. |
