The present invention is directed to a method for sanitizing a system where microorganisms are capable of growing which comprises adding to said system a microbiocidally effective amount of an oxidant capable of releasing nascent or singlet oxygen for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, and a microbiocidally effective amount of a microbicide for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.
