[Also in Division F2] A lockable latch assembly for a door comprises a pair of handle roses 35, 35A joined by an adjustable-length tube 32, 33 for passing through the door, a splined spindle 44 passing through this tube and having an axially-slideable handle-mounting slide 68 on one end, axially-inward movement of this sleeve by its handle causing engagement between projections 127 on the sleeve and an abutment 122 in the tube to prevent rotation of the handles and so lock the latch. The handle knobs are screwed on to the threads 45, 74 on the spindle and the sleeve respectively, and are journalled in the roses. The slide 68 has a splined bore 72 which accommodates the splined middle part 52 of the spindle, and the neck 82 of the inside handle 78 is long enough to permit sliding movement, the extent of which is preset by a spacer 106. The handles are locked on the spindle by lock-washers 86, 101 respectively. Each handle is closed by a cover 116, 112. A key 122 projecting from the inside of sleeve 32 engages between adjacent pairs of projections 127 on a flange 70 on sleeve 68 to prevent rotation when the inside handle 78 is pressed inwardly, towards the door. The latching mechanism comprises a latch bolt 160 pivoted in a frame 140 on the door frame and engaging a striker 132 on the door. This latch bolt is pushed into the disengaging position by an adjustable plunger 185 operated by wings 54 on the spindle and engaging fingers 204 on the plunger when the spindle is rotated. The position of the latch bolt is adjustable within the frame 140 by virtue of an adjustable retaining plate 150. The bolt is loaded by a plastics spring 170. The door may be unlocked from the outside by inserting a pin 226 through a hole 225 in the handle cover 112 to engage the end plate 212 of a push-rod 213 which pushes the inner. handle back to the unlocking position. To disable the locking function; the slide is secured against endwise movement by advancing the knob 78 on its threads 74 to take up the available axial play. The handles are locked on the threads by a castellated washer 94 (Fig. 7) having an inner cruciform hole for the spindle and outer lugs 96 to engage a key 90 on the inner surface of the handle. |
