1,138,014. Friction clutches. CREED & CO. Ltd. 30 June, 1967, No. 30284/67. Heading F2C. An electromagnetically engaged friction clutch comprises a helical coil spring 2 secured at one end to a continuously rotating input shaft 1 and at the other end to an armature 8 and a bearing ring 10 which is supported for rotation and axial movement relative to an output shaft 5, energization of a stationary electromagnet 9 attracting the armature 8 axially to cause the coil 2 to contract radially to grip the periphery of an enlarged portion 7 of the output shaft 5. The armature bears against a wear-resistant facing 12 on the electromagnet when the latter is energized. A bearing sleeve 3 supports the input shaft 1 and one end of the shaft 5. The clutch may be used in an electric typewriter or teleprinter drive. |
