The device comprises a middle gear assembly having a single clutch mechanism to convert the drive force from an idler mechanism into a desired torque and transmit it. The single clutch mechanism includes a frictional plate fitted around a middle boss, a flange fitted around the boss beneath the plate so as to be selectively in contact with the felt, a coil spring interposed between the middle gear and the frictional plate and a middle pulley fitted around the flange and connected with a drive mechanism by a belt and being upwardly and downwardly movable with respect to the flange by a lifting mechanism to convert the drive force of drive mechanism into a torque which varies depending on the rotation direction of drive mechanism and transmit it.
