In a process for melting scrap in superheated molten iron, the scrap is charged in a packeted form and introduced into superheated molten iron prepared by means of a melting process separate from the scrap-melting process. The carbon content of the superheated molten iron is adjusted in the melt outside the scrap-melting process, and the carbon addition is carried out as a function of the carbon decrease in the molten scrap.
