JOHNSON'S ELECTRO HEATING PAD From the very beginning, Heat treatment has been a time honored means of obtaining relief from physical pain in conjunction with medicine. Yet, pain will remain pain , but the search for new and better techniques of heat applications continue. Previously we used hot water bottles for fomentation. Moving with the times, in the mid 70's Sunbeam a company came up with a product better known as the Electric Heating Pad, which has an element with an adjustable switch that has three levels of temperatures. This pad is in the form of a belt that can be strapped on to areas where it is to be applied. but the pad's temperatures; are sufficiently high to cause burns, regardless of the control switch, so the pad has to be frequently removed from the skin to avoid burns. This is due to the thermostat which is built in to the pad. In the thermostat, there are two metal strips, which when in contact, conduct electric current which heats the element, and resulting in heating the pad. The greatest danger is any kind of pressure could trigger the two metal strips and could burn the user seriously. Especially if He/She goes to sleep or for some reasons is unable to get to the control switch or unstrap the pad. At that moment in time Sunbeam's Electric Heating Pad was a break through to treat patients suffering from orthopaedic ailments. But in time it has proven that Sunbeam Electric Heating Pad is not the safest device for fomentation it is in fact quite dangerous, and needs constant supervision. A new concept has been introduced by a similar product. Johnson's electro Heating Pad is designed with modern technology to operate at a regulated temperature for fomentation. It can be used for more than 24 hours at a stretch, without getting a burn. It is made of an heating element, felt, felt padding, enclosed in a rexine case with high frequency sealing. It is about half an inch in thickness and is extremely flexible, which allows it to take the shape of the body part easily. The heat of the pad can be controlled by a switch that has three levels of temperatures (high, medium, and low). There is no thermostat in Johnson's Electro Pad therefore there is no danger of getting burnt.
