PURPOSE:To produce a magnetic recording medium excellent in durability and reliability and not deteriorating the electromagnetic transducing characteristics under heat. CONSTITUTION:An oxide layer 103 is formed on the surface of a thin magnetic metal film 102 in 20-230Angstrom thickness and a protective layer 104 is further formed on the oxide layer 103 in 20-230Angstrom thickness. The total thickness of the layers 103, 104 is regulated to 40-250Angstrom . A lubricant such as perfluoroalkyl ester of carboxylic acid may be applied to the surface of the protective layer 104. The center line average roughness Ra of the rear side of a nonmagnetic substrate used is regulated to 0.0015-0.0070mum and the max. height Rmax of the protrusions is regulated to 0.015-0.070mum. |
