The procedure is for use on a catalytic burner (10) connected to the exhaust of an i.c. engine (1). It creates a sharp enrichment of the exhaust gases with unburned fuel, and analyses the state of the burner's operation by the presence or absence of heat released in it, indicating the oxidation of the unburnt fuel. The sharp enrichment of the exhaust gases with unburnt fuel is produced by releasing the accelerator pedal (14) without cutting the fuel feed to the engine, and the oxidation reaction in the burner is detected by a probe situated at the outlet from the burner, comparing the temperature with a set value. ADVANTAGE - More reliable determination of catalytic burner's state of operation.
