New sulphonated polyepoxy succinic acids and salts - prepd. by oligomerisation of salt of epoxy] succinic acid in calcium sulphite, used as scale inhibitor and sequestrant

Sulphonated polyepoxysuccinic acids and their sol. salts, of formula (I) are new, wher (I) are obtd. by oligomerisation, by adding 2-80 mol.% of CaSO3 or CaSO3.xH2O to an aq. soln. of salts of epoxysuccinic acid, reacting at 40-150 deg. C for up to 8 h., sepg. any ppte., and isolating oligomers in the filtrate. Aq. soln. of (I) and salts are also claimed. In (I), n = 2-50; M = H and/or cations giving waver-soluble salts; R = H or (substd.) 1-4C alkyl. USE - The oligomers are used as scale inhibitors or as sequestrants in aq. systems (claimed), after isolation or as the aq. soln. The scale inhibitors are used mainly in water-cooling systems and in sea water desalination plant, and the sequestrants in washing compsns.
