In a multi-track feed section of the machine is arranged a rotating drum (1) divided across its width into circumferential channels corresponding to the feed tracks. As the drum rotates the peeled potatoes are picked up by paddles (6) and carried past a fixed bisecting or quartering knife. Spaced uniformly round the channels are wedge segments (5) and paddles (6) arranged in left and right pairs with a gap in the middle for passage of the knife. These form a series of nests in which the potato is accurately centred. The rotation of the drum carries the potato past the knife, which is positioned in the middle of the channel with the end just clear of the channel floor.
