1,240,995. Control of laminar flow by suction. HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 60387/67. Heading F2R. A wing 9 or other lifting surface has built up on its external surface 9 an auxiliary surface structure support network of stringers 11 made of plastics material, for example, expanded ebonite bonded to the surface of the wing 9 and to a stiffening intermediate sheet 12 of impervious flexible plastics material perforated with holes 13 to give a 50% open area. A sheet of a porous sintered high density polythene sheet 14 is laid over the sheet 12 and the stringers 11 and plastics sheets 12, 14 define channels 15 which have stringers 16 across the ends to promote even suction through porous sheet 14 by stopping off the channels 15 except for metering holes 17. To keep the pores of sheet 14 clear the direction of air flow is reversed, say at one hour intervals to blow for say thirty seconds. Alternatively the support structure could be built up in a multi-layer honeycomb structure.
