In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the kind having a three-sided piston 7, Fig. 1, planetarily rotatable within a two-lobed epitrochoidal contoured housing 1, a fuel-injection nozzle 10 is located in the peripheral wall of the housing near a minor axis 2 thereof immediately adjacent a combustion air admission part 8 to inject fuel transversely through the incoming air to cause vigorous turbulence and improved mixture formation. The nozzle may be disposed parallel to the axis 2 as shown in Fig. 1 or at an angle to this axis Fig.2, (not shown) or inclined towards the admission part opening Fig. 3, (not shown). The nozzle may be a combined air/ fuel nozzle and can be heated by the exhaust gases to further enhance mixture formation. In this case air, or air/fuel mixture or combustion gases may be taken from a phase in the engine operating cycle or compressed air from an external source may be used. |
