Treatment of raw drinking water which is contaminated with organic substances by means of exposure to UV-light uses either a) ultraviolet light having a wavelength longer than 230 nm, or b) ultraviolet light having some components with wavelength shorter than 230 nm in combination with nitrite-destroying substances. Also claimed is an appts. for carrying out this procedure, having at least one UV-lamp, preferably in the form of a submerisble lamp unit, and a translucent reacton vessel with an inner surface which strongly reflects UV-light and in which a turbulent flow pattern is produced. The lamp produces predominantly light of wavelength longer than 230 nm and/or light of this type is produced by means of a filter device.
