A standard lamp comprises an elongated translucent screen C disposed at the top of the standard A and surrounding one or more discharge or fluorescent lamps F, and a choke and starter unit K housed in the base B of the standard. The screen is preferably made of selfsupporting plastics material and has a lower metal fitting D, by means of which it is secured to the standard, and an upper metal fitting G which carries a socket for the upper end of the lamp F. The screen may, however, be supported by a framework, the bars of which are located within the screen and sufficiently far therefrom to avoid the formation of sharp shadows. The lower metal fitting may be pivoted to the standard or may be fixed thereto at any desired angle, and two or more screens, each surrounding one or more lamps, may be provided. The standard may consist of a set of telescopically interfitting tubes or may be jointed to facilitate storage. |
