A tetralin compound which is useful as a liquid crystal material and is of formula R-X-A<1>-Y<1>-A<2>- (Y<2>-A<3>)n-Z-R* wherein R is C3 to C20 alkyl; X is -O-CO-, -O- or a single bond; n is 0 or 1; each of A<1>, A<2> and A<3> is a divalent aromatic group; each of Y<1> and Y<2> is -COO-, -O-CO-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2O- or -OCH2-; Z is -O-, -O-CO- or a single bond; and R* is a specific optically active group.
