1,205,794. p-Phenylphenol. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 22 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 43306/67. Heading C2C. p-Phenylphenol is prepared by vaporizing p-cyclohexenylphenol, passing it over a dehydrogenation catalyst at 300-450‹ C. optionally in the presence of hydrogen. Suitable dehydrogenation catalysts are iron, cobalt, ruthenium, rhodium, platinum oxide, platinum black, chromium, molybdenum and nickel. The cyclohexenylphenol used as starting material may be obtained by condensing cyclohexane with excess phenol at about 60‹ C. in the presence of a condensation catalyst and preferably a promoter and heating the 1,1-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexane formed in the presence of a basic or acidic cleavage catalyst. As a modification of the process the product of the cleavage reaction may be passed as a liquid, along with hydrogen over the dehydrogenation catalyst preferably at 150-250‹ C. |
