The apparatus is used in the production of magnetic discs for data storage in computer technology. This unit provides improved speed, reliability, and correct location of the last pulse relative to the first pulse in a train, independent of the rotational speed of the magnetic carrier. This is achieved through identification in advance of the location where the last pulse is to be written on the synchronization tape during the synchronization tape generation process. The required synchronization tape write rate is generated by a voltage-controlled oscillator; after conversion into digital form, it is compared to a code that corresponding to the desired number of pulses on the synchronization tape, leading to generation of a frequency increase/decrease signal.<IMAGE>
