Multistage solvent extn. process

A multi-stage solvent extn. process for deasphalting a hydrotreated resid (I) and removing cracking catalyst fines from decanted oil (II) comprises: (A) mixing a non-aromatic 3-7C hydrocarbon solvent (III) with a mixt. of (I) and (II) in a first separator at or below the critical condition of (III) to extract asphaltene (a) and a deasphalted oil-solvent mixt. (b); (B) recovering deresined catalyst fines-contg. solvent-extracted asphaltene (a) and (b) contg. fines with less than 20 ppm silica and less than 20 ppm alumina from the first separator; (C) feeding (b) to a second separator at a temp. and pressure sufficient to solvent extract a deasphalted oil and solvent and (D) recovering the deasphalted oil and (III) from the second separator and recycling at least part of (III) to first separator in (A). Purificn. of decanted oil obtd. from a catalytic cracker by solvent extn. of decanted oil-resid mixt. contg. fines and (III) in a first separator, solvent extn. of a fine-lean decanted oil-solvent mixt. in a second separator and recovering (III) and fine-lean decanted oil. A hydrotreating process in which a resid is hydrotreated with H2 in the presence of a hydrotreating catalyst followed by multistage solvent extn. A process for hydrotreating crude oil is also claimed.
