A metal treatment mixt. contains (pref. 40 vol.%) water, (pref. 40 vol.%) hydrochloric acid, (pref. 20 vol.% of 40% concn.) iron (III) chloride and (pref. 1g/l) fine tragacanth (DAB7) powder. A metal treatment process involves partially contacting metal surfaces with the mixt., pref. by immersion or spraying at room temp.
