The communication system uses at least one optical amplifier (1) inserted in the light transmission path between 2 opposing electro-optical transducers (2, 3). The amplifier has an associated power limiting device (4) for the transmitted light pulses, to protect the amplifier from damage.The power limiting device has an absorption coefficient which increases with the increasing optical power. Pref. the device uses a doped waveguide section utilising dual-photon absorption. The absorber material pref. comprises Nd or Tm.
