A novel Cu based alloy has the compsn. 2.4-6.9% Sn, 6.8-8.2% Al, 0.1-1% Cr, 0.01-0.65% Pt, 0.05-2% Si, 0.05-0.15% Th, 0.05-10.9% Y and balance Cu. The alloy may also contain up to 1% Be, up to 0.5% Zn and upto 1% Ti. The alloy is cast to ingots at about 1200 deg.C. It can be extruded at about 840 deg.C, hot rolled at 600-850 deg.C or hot forged at 775-850 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - The alloy can replace gold in luxury articles, since it has the same colour and a high corrosion resistance close to that of stainless steels, and can be used in the mechanical, aircraft and space industries, since it has high tensile strength, wear resistance and thermal conductivity. It has excellent castability (faultless cast surface esp. when vacuum cast), easy extrudability (allowing prodn. of complicated shapes), good rollability and forgeability, good cold workability (50% redn. without annealing) and good chemical properties.
