The embankment retaining wall is erected from trough-shaped elements (3), which are arranged in rows with one row lying upon another and with the troughs of each row staggered w.r.t. the troughs in the row underneath. The troughs have rear faces which are inclined to the vertical and are so arranged that the faces lie in a common plane. The troughs are filled with the material forming the embankment and are anchored by strips of fabric (6) which extend horizontally into the embankment and are anchored to it.
