A doffing and donning device consisting of an articulated frame forms an integral part of the spinning machine and in its rest position lies directly under the spindle holder 17 for a bobbin being wound with spun thread. The articulated frame consists of a crosspiece 1 carrying means 2, 3 for gripping empty or full bobbins, and a pair of rods 5 connecting the cross piece with blocks 6,6' which are axially slidable on rod 7. A chain 8 driven by wheel 9 is secured to the blocks and on rotation of wheel 9 the crosspiece 1 is caused to be raised or lowered as blocks 6, 6' move between positions shown in full and dashed lines. The frame is mounted on a bearing structure formed of plate 12, 13, 14, horizontal cross plates 15, 15' and a vertical guide 16 for the cross piece 1. The entire structure and frame is movable in the horizontal direction by a rack 20 on the structure meshing with a pinion 19 driven by a motor 10. Each gripping means on the cross piece may consist of a pair of hollow metal cylinders 2, 3 internally provided with air tubes and inflatable by compressed air.
